Alternative housing systems impact indoor air quality differently. The Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply (CSES) study monitored indoor air quality over a 27-month period among three housing systems to quantify indoor gaseous and particulate matter (PM) concentrations, thermal environment and building ventilation rates. A mobile air emission-monitoring unit (MAEMU) was used to collect and analyze air samples from three locations per house and one ambient location. Aviary houses had a difficult time maintaining temperature compared to conventional caged and enriched colony systems and were found to have poorer indoor air quality with higher ammonia levels, PM levels and carbon dioxide concentrations. Methane concentrations were similar for all three housing types and there was no significant difference in relative humidity.

Pullet Ammonia Emissions Tool - Frequent Manure Removal. The tool includes producer editable fields that allow for input of pullet age and inventory. The spreadsheet is set to calculate value based on daily manure removal from the house and weekly removal from the farm.

The latest tool should always be used to ensure most accurate estimation. The tool version is indicated at the lower right-hand corner of the document. Future version modifications will be updated here in the research library as needed.

Pullet Ammonia Emissions Tool - Long-term Manure Storage. The tool includes producer editable fields that allow for input of pullet age, inventory, and manure removal option for a specific farm set-up. This spreadsheet is set up to reflect twice a week manure removal from the houses and long-term or no on-farm manure storage.

The latest tool should always be used to ensure most accurate estimation. The tool version is indicated at the lower right-hand corner of the document. Future version modifications will be updated here in the research library as needed.

Layer Ammonia Emissions Tool. The tool includes producer editable fields that allow for input of housing type, inventory and other variables for a specific farm set-up. NOTE: Cage-free floor system barns with no manure removal system should use the high-rise housing system fields to calculate the emissions.
